Art & Life for January 2007

Photo of the month

January is a clean slate, a time to try new things, a leap into the void…

Leap into the Void

Le saut dans le vide: Yves Klein 1960

Oh the humanity of it all…

The always sartorially spiffy Yves Klein is as relative today as he was at the height of his fame in the mid-20th century. To cut to the chase, much of his work was aimed at abandoning connoisseurship notions of art - primarily, ownership and materialism. Art was too important and interesting to be left to the art world.

A genius at presenting the principle, or the idea (a painting without a gestural stroke or picture, a musical composition with only one note, therefore devoid of music, a book without text, etc.) it was up to the viewer to reflect on the art, and find meaning. Art acted as a catalyst for a lived or shared experience.

Fast forward to the age of social media, and all the other buzzwords we toss around so glibly. Just as good art is about opening your eyes, seeing something a little differently and ultimately increasing your awareness, that's what is happening now with podcasts, blogs, YouTube and other shared social media. We can now interact and connect with businesses, brands and each other in a way previously impossible. It is indeed a time to leap into the void.

Wine of the Month

Barossa ChardonnayPeter Lehmann - Barossa Chardonnay 2005

With all this springlike weather, the mind turns to thoughts of peaches... No? What?! Nevermind, this awesome little chardonnay will have you thinking springlike thoughts with its generous juicy peachy yumminess. It's delicate and round and all that stuff, but more importantly, it's the perfect vibrant wine to share with friends.

4 stars out of 5 - $14.95 LCBO

Miss HarryHewitson - Miss Harry 2005

Another astonishing wine! The Hewitson Miss Harry from the Barossa Valley is considered the Cotes du Rhone of the Southern Hemisphere - and it shows! Dark fruit, exotic spices and a hint of earthiness, this wonderfully smoooooth red goes with just about anything. Try it today!!

4.5 stars out of 5 - $23.00 SAQ

Cool Sites for Wasting Time

Buzzword Hell  - Folksonomy, Web 2.0, Blogosphere - what's your most hated buzzword?
My Name is Klein, Yves Klein  - While we are on the topic of Yves Klein, I came across this brilliant blog entry by Muli Koppel - Do yourself a favour and read it!

Stuff that Disturbs Me

I hate advertising that is a waste of paper! If you didn't catch my rant about the "time saving tips" put out by Canada Post for its VentureOne members - it's here for you to read.

Stuff I Love!

  • Musically I'm in a Never the Bride (The Living Tree), La Lupe (Fever), Devendra Banhart (Lazy Butterfly) and Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah (Skin of my Yellow Country Teeth) kinda mood these days...
  • If you happen to be up in my neck of the woods, there is a lovely little boulangerie/patisserie in Ste-Adele called "Les Moulins Lafayette" - without a doubt, the almond croissant is worth the drive. (I know, I know, we are all supposed to be on post-holiday diets, but remember: a life lived for tomorrow is a crappy today!)
