Art & Life for May 2006
Photo of the Month
May is flowers, a spring-inspired pit-a-pat of the heart excitement, a "so long, farewell, and goodbye" to gloves and sensible boots…and, of course, the return of dandelions.

Oh the humanity of it all…
This month's featured humanity is Language…
Okay, admittedly maybe I should focus on something other than language month after month…but there are just so much gosh-darned things to talk about! Take for instance the review excerpts that Chrysler Canada has been using in its recent print ads.
In a review of the 2006 Dodge Caravan, some scribe at Intellichoice managed to describe the vehicle as the "highly evolved results of 20 plus years of family hauling mastery…"
Canadian Auto Press, not to be outdone, exclaimed that if you wanted "…pure, unadulterated power with the ability to rule the roads in unrighteous dominion…" that Chrysler's 300 was for you.
Unrighteous dominion? Some people might say these two quotes are examples of hyperbolic journalism. Some might say they are overwrought, other kinder folks might concede excessively exuberant… but I like to think of them as gobsmackingly inspired! Really, you gotta bow down to someone who can elevate a minivan to the ranks of "family hauling mastery."
Wine of the Month
2004 Basa Rueda Bianco Hands down this is the wine of the month - no ifs, ands, or buts. Incredibly affordable, it's a perfect choice for spring. From Spain, it's got a crisp granny green apple flavour mixed with a bit of the loveable old Sauvignon grassiness - yet remarkably light with a crystal clean finish. In homage to an acquaintance of mine, I would even go so far as to say it was "fruity, yet exuberant with just a subtle hint of effervescence lingering on the back of the tongue." Serve ice cold. $13.20 - 4 stars out of 5
2002 Peter Lehmann Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon Run --run now-- to the liquor store and stock up on this utterly wonderful Aussie wine. Extraordinary velvetiness. Un-freaking-real richness and texture. Deep, rich, voluptuous black berry fruit flavour. And it gets better from there on. Quite simply, it's a wine that has the potential to put the lush back into luscious. $21.95 - 4 stars out of 5

Stuff That Disturbs Me
I know it doesn't make a lot of sense considering my above begrudging admiration of the phrase "family hauling mastery", but I've always hated when people take perfectly good nouns and turn them into verbs… You know, "verbing" them. (Sometimes referred to within academic circles as "super-anti-gerundification" of words.) The expression "I'm going garage-saling" springs to mind. But more and more these things are slipping into popular culture. The other day, I picked up some shampoo and to my horror found the claim "bodifying shampoo." Quickly scanning the shelves, I quickly realized that more than half the shampoos there were "bodifying" shampoos. This disturbs me.
