Art & Life for February 2006

Photo of the Month

Despite the chatter of all-knowing groundhogs, it's still winter. The window told me so.

Frosty the Window

Oh the humanity of it all…

This month's featured humanity is Language (yes, once again!!)

Last week I had the pleasure of appearing on The Small Business Show on The New 940 Montreal in a roundtable discussion about online marketing. The show's host is Sherry Thacker, the powerhouse behind the Women's Entrepreneurial Networking System, and my co-panelists were Barry Welford of Strategic Marketing Montreal and David Bedjanic of Sellance Inc. It was a great night, and I even managed to say the word "Scooby snacks" on the air, which, frankly, isn't said enough.

It got me thinking about the words that marketers use, and how words become overused and meaningless and only exist as a type of "AdSpeak." Do you have words and phrases you hate? I do. Buckets of them.

  • value-added
  • proactive
  • leverage
  • customer-centric (usually said by companies that aren't...)
  • synergy
  • leading-edge solutions (cutting-edge solutions, total solution package...)
  • low-hanging fruit
  • extreme (jumping out of a plane is extreme, shaving and deodorant shouldn't be...)

Send me the marketing terms and buzzwords you hate!

Wine of the Month

MaculanMaculan Pino & Toi - 2004
A mix of Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Tocai Friulano, this fantastic little white stood out this month for its crunchy green apple acidity and tart lime flavours with a hint of almond and floral notes. 4 stars (out of 5) $16.70

Norton Bodega Norton Malbec - 2003
Yummy!!  This tasty little number from Argentina delivers incredible value for the money. With 100% Malbec grapes, this red has aromas of ripe plums and raspberries and a hint of mocha-nutmeg. It has a pleasing "mouthfeel" and a lovely little fiery kick at the end. Better than a lot of wines that cost twice the price. 4 stars (out of 5) $14.95

Cool Sites for Wasting Time

Bodies for Christ - although the name sounds a little menacing, this site was sent to me from a friend who quipped "Apparently just praying to God for a tighter arse is not enough."

Gizoogle - How would your site sound in gangsta rap??

Stuff That Disturbs Me

Gee, I think I'm making up for lost time here, but there has been a lot of stuff that disturbs me lately….

Dreamcatchers in cars. (Need I say more?)

The freakish way that as stars get older they start to look like other stars, but not always in a good way. Have you ever noticed that Peter Gabriel is starting to look like Burle Ives?

Stewart - Manilow

Or that Rod Stewart is looking really similar to Barry Manilow? The list goes on....Make the madness stop!

Stuff I Love

This month I am grooving on:

That Google is going after evil spammers! SearchEngineWatch reported that Google has removed both BMW Germany and Ricoh Germany for sneaky redirects. Thank you Google! I work very hard helping my clients achieve great search engine rankings through proper, "whitehat" methods --a quality site, great content and strong, relevant incoming links-- so it is nice to see something finally happen to the ones that think they can cheat the system.
