Art & Life for January 2006

Photo of the Month

January is the time for celebrating the incredible life of The Fabulous Miss Kate. Happy B-day, Katey... thanks for all the adventures, late nights, great book recommendations, laughs, retail therapy and endless fascinating moments. (Remember when we found the bar behind the men's coat rack??!)

The Fabulous Miss Kate & A.C.R

Oh the humanity of it all…

This month's featured humanity is Language (yes, once again!!)

Anyone who knows me knows that I love words - I can't always pronounce them, but damnit - I love 'em! 2005 brought us some great new expressions:

Jump the couch - Thanks to Tom Cruise, this now means to exhibit odd, erratic behaviour.

ICE number - Conceived by a British paramedic in April 2005, an ICE number is an emergency phone number(s) programmed into a mobile phone under ICE (In Case of Emergency), allowing emergency personnel to quickly scroll to the number, identify the patient and contact relatives or friends.

Splog - a fake blog created for the intent of boosting search engine rankings by embedding multiple links to affiliate sites.

Shiftless - a person too pseudo-hip/pretentious/lazy to hit the "Shift" key, producing only all-lowercase email messages.

Life-hacking - any trick or method --both low-tech and hi-tech-- of making life easier by reducing chaos (email interruptions, the phone, etc.) and get things done. More and more people are ditching their PalmPilots and grabbing some index cards and a rubber band to create the Hipster P.D.A.  Low-tech is where it's at!

Next month I'll be ranting about words that should be banished. "First-time caller" springs to mind (usually heard on call-in shows)… does anyone really care?? If you have some - dawg, actually, etc. etc. be sure to email!

Wine of the Month

Lucien Albrecht Pinot Gris Lucien Albrecht Tokay-Pinot Gris, 2002

Straaw-coloured, clear and shiny, this wine was bright, sparkly and sassy! A huge thank you to Keith & Sue for introducing me to this rich white with exotic overtones that remains incredibly dry. 4 stars (out of 5) $19.85

Hill of GoldRosemount Estate - Mudgee Hill of Gold, 2003, Cabernet Sauvignon

A wonderful wine to share with family on a cold winter night! An enchanting dark purple, it had massive very ripe berry flavours mixed with a hint of dark chocolate and untertones of cedar. 3.0 stars (out of 5) $22.95 (LCBO)

Cool Sites for Wasting Time

Accept Jesus and Get a Free Playstation 2 -Thanks to Chico for this one....

Only on E-Bay you say? Now you, too, can bid on a single cooked unwanted Brussels sprout leftover from the seller's Christmas dinner. When I last checked it was at 91 U.K. Pounds.

Pathetic Personals -Okay, perhaps it’s a little mean..but c'mon - they're weird.

Stuff That Disturbs Me...

Okay, perhaps I'm getting soft - or at least forgetful. I will update this section throughout the month as I remember!

Stuff I Love...

This month? This month I am grooving on...

  • Sinead's version of Vampire from Throw Down Your Arms
  • Bison Spread from Terre des Bisons just a short drive away...
  • A new year, to start afresh, dream new dreams and appreciate my friends and family all over again.
