Art & Life for November

Photo of the Month

November is shades of grey and filled with birthdays of some très cool people. Me, for instance! As well as kp and Tabatha (seen below) Happy birthday all!

Tabatha

Oh the humanity of it all…

This month's featured humanity is Sociology: Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing.

As a young girl I always though Anne Charlotte Riley was kinda dull, and yearned for something with a little more spark and intrigue. However, I felt pretty good about my name when I met a girl at school named Mary Hammeth. (If you don't get it, think spoonerism) A friend of mine swears a fellow classmate at her school was named Philippa Bath. All of this came tumbling back to me when it was announced that Nick Cage and his wife, Alice, saddled their newborn son with the name Kal-el. You know, Superman's name on Krypton. In the strange, strange world of celebrity baby names, Kal-el is positively conservative. Not convinced? Consider these celebrity baby names:

  • Jermajesty - son of Jermaine Jackson
  • Moxie Crimefighter - daughter of magician Penn Gillette
  • Fifi Trixibelle, Peaches Honeyblossom, and Pixie - Bob Geldof's daughters
  • Dixie Dot and Bibi Belle - designer Anna Ryder Richardson's twin girls
  • Pilot Inspektor - son of actor Jason Lee (as if the name wasn't odd enough, he had to improvise with the spelling…)
  • Audio Science - daughter of actress Shannyn Sossamon
  • Blue Angel - daughter of U2's "The Edge"
  • Elijah Bob Patricus Guggi Q - Bono's son
  • Daisy Boo and Poppy Honey - celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's daughters
  • Phinnaeus & Hazel - twin son and daughter of Julia Roberts
  • Tu - doesn't sound too bad until you realize it is the daughter of actor Rob Morrow

Wine of the Month

Bodegas Muga RiojaBodegas Muga Rioja 2004
Wow. What a surprise. Such a spectacular wine from start to finish. Sunny, straw-like colours swirl about in the glass and the first sip - mmmmmmm! Think lush honeyed pear mixed with a dash of lemon and pineapple. Great structure and wonderful complexity. Definitely a "more-ish" wine!  3.5 - 4 stars (out of 5) $17.80

Pio Cesare NebbioloPio Cesare - Nebbiolo d'Alba 2001
Rich deep, deep ruby - almost garnet, this easy red was soft and delicate. The floral bouquet gave way to a wine had notes of mature berries, vanilla and a dash of spicy wood.  Call up some friends on a chilly night, and invite them over for some Nebbiolo d'Alba, a little homemade antipasto and some rustic pizzas. 4 stars (out of 5) $30.50

Cool Sites for Wasting Time

Strange New Products - Always a favourite around here!

ChessBoxing.com - The Thinking Man's Contact Sport

Only two this month - if you come across anything fun, interesting, unusual - be sure to send it to me!

Stuff That Disturbs Me

  • This weather!! Let's hope November is better! The non-stop rain of October was really getting me down. (While out visiting some friends someone commented it was like "Vancouver weather" to which my quick-witted paramour retorted, "No wonder there are so many heroin addicts there.")
  • The whole concept of "Hot Smoothees" (I have to look away from the TV when I see the steaming pink drink)
  • A game for kids called "Mall Madness" that tells kids that the "ATM keeps giving" and encourages kids to "shop 'til you drop"
  • The "Le monde dans ton frigo" Coca Cola billboard campaign here in Quebec that shows an open fridge with Coke bottles printed in various languages. C'mon people!! It's not the world - it's American culture in regional packaging.
  •  Hummer cologne - yes, you read that correctly, Hummer cologne. There's a great article here. (Thanks Lenny!!!)

Stuff I Love

This month? This month I am grooving on:

  • The cooler temperatures mean flannel sheets and lots of down duvets, two of my favourite things!
  • Pomegranates (Either alone or in Fessenjan, a pomegranate/walnut chicken stew. When in the NDG part of Montreal be sure to stop by Quartier Perse on Decarie at Monkland. Fessenjan is highly recommended for a cool November day!)
  • All My Friends Are Superheroes by Andrew Kaufman (Thanks Marcella! Thanks Michael!)

Have a great November everyone!!
